Teton Crest Trail

img_1352Grueling but fun. We started at the Death Canyon Trail Head hiking past Phelps Lake and up the switchbacks to the Static Peak Divide at ~10700 ft. Due to a late start after doing a 12 mile bicycle shuttle we still had 3 miles before we could find a tree to hang our food. Luckily I convinced Janet to leave the bear bin at home because another 5 pounds up that 4000 ft elevation gain would’ve been rather difficult. Unfortunately not having a bear bin made for some fun trying to get the rope over a branch and the two food bags sufficiently high. At one stage Janet was balancing on my shoulders to achieve the impossible. It was great being high up above the bug infested valleys and it never even got cold at night. We didn’t have a water filter but decided that the pristine alpine springs were safe enough for our enjoyment. The next day saw us passing Sunset Lake before crossing Hurricane pass and then down the back side of the 3 Tetons. Our backcountry permit allowed for another night of camping but considering the amount of bugs zooming around we decided to push on and finish the hike early. We were very happy to arrive at the Jenny Lake boat dock after 25 miles of hiking.

Never drink the water in the backcountry without filtering or boiling it first. There are some excellent lightweight and inexpensive filters. Getting giardia is no fun and it can be difficult to diagnose and cure. Don’t take any more chances like that again. Consider yourself scolded.
