Flying the Owens Valley

img_1449 img_1236The last couple of days were real tough ;) Each morning I found myself trying to decide how to best use the perfect weather we’ve been having. The decision was usually between backcountry skiing in the Sierras or paragliding on the White Mountains but with flying being my favorite hobby it came out tops every time. This morning was no different but with the snow melting fast I started packing for an overnight ski trip. That was when Kari called. She was doing a tandem flight with a client and had a recovery driver organized. One look at the beautiful cumies lazily building over White Mountain was enough to twist my rubber arm. After all it is not every day that you get to fly with the likes of Kari Castle in near perfect flying conditions in the Owens Valley. I raced out to Flynn’s where the crew was waiting and we all piled in Brian’s truck for the 4WD ride to the top. The skies looked BIG and I didn’t waste much time getting airborne, quickly climbing out above launch. The next 3 hours was spent either climbing like a rocket in the strong thermals or sinking like a stone in the associated sink. I managed to snap some pics at 14 000 feet in a smoother piece of air. Check out the snow covered Sierras to West and the view into Nevada to the East. Another great day.

Damn dude… nice! Gives me cold shivers just looking at your pics. There was supposed to be a Packsaddle fly-in this weekend but one of the Pack pilots bit it last weekend so now it’s been cancelled. Looks like decent flying wx H-town way so hopefully we’re going towing locally. PS funny coincidence I finally got around to advertising my O2 system and I think I have a buyer.

Gavin, you would’ve loved the wack I took yesterday. After that nobody wanted to come close to me in a thermal. Who bit it?

Andre

On 5/2 Donna and I drove up your dirt road to where it crosses McGee Creek at the cattle corral. Couldn’t see your rig so figured you had left. I had three days of fishing Crowley, Lower Owens and Convict Creek until the strong winds made us decide to return back home.

We love your recent flying pictures.

Sorry we missed you.
