Painted Canyon

Late yesterday evening I arrived in the Painted Canyon of the Mecca Hills. These soft muddy hills and canyons were formed by the movements of the San Andreas Fault. I expected it to be a quite busy but there were few signs of life around so I found myself a nice hidden spot behind a rock. As soon as I got settled in I discovered that the chaotic campsite close by was indeed some derelict’s hideout and judging by all the trash lying around not anybody I would want to be friends with. It was a tough decision to stay but it was late and I didn’t want to drive out on the washboard again so I settled inside the RV fully expecting some visitor during the night. The night went by without any disturbances and a beautiful warm day followed. I spend some time exploring the canyons around camp and mountain biking up the Painted Canyon road. For the remote feel of this place it sure is noisy with what seems like 99% of Southern California’s air traffic climbing or descending overhead. I am moving tomorrow.
