Somewhere between Botswana and Namibia
Somewhere between Botswana and Namibia the guy next to me levitated to full horizontal mode thus blocking my way to the laptop sitting in the overhead compartment. Not that I would leave my delicious Sugar Cured Springbok Loin and Pinot Noir alone anyway so my HTC’s thumbpad will have to do for now. I am lucky enough to fly business class to New York and boy what a difference it makes. Considering the sleeper beds, great food and attentive service the only drawback is the fact that it is much more difficult to happen upon an interesting fellow passenger in biz class than in standard old cattle class. Except for the time I was sitting next to Julie from NY very little conversation is the norm. Julie and I got along so well that NY to CPT felt more like Johannesburg to Pretoria or Los Angeles to Laguna Beach. The in-flight map shows that way below us, we just passed the Spitzkoppe in Namibia - a place Mareli would love to climb at (maybe next year). The other thing about these Trans Atlantic / hemisphere / year flights is the way they get me thinking. Maybe it is just the timing but I always have this sense of excitement and reflection on the past 12. No doubt that being holed up in an airplane for 17 + hrs will get you thinking but I also tend to do these flights at the start of a new year before I had time to think about my resolutions for the upcoming 12. Ok, ok I know the pinot is at least partly to blame!
So for 2008 I am thinking balance and time management with lots of flexibility and a sense of adventure thrown in and we’re off to a galloping start. We are in Angola now… Wish me luck!
