Canyoneering in North Wash

Described by some as the 100 year flood, south-central Utah has taken quite a hit during the last week or so. The buttes and mesas around Moab had literally hundreds of waterfalls pouring off them and my canyoneering plans for the San Rafael Swell had to be adapted as most of the roads were washed out. All that water and slot canyons do not normally go well together but if you are adventuring with the likes of Dave and Penny you are sure to find safe passage. Four days and four canyons later the group had grown to more than 13 people and we all had a great time in this canyon playground. Wednesday saw us working our way through Trail Canyon which at one point is so narrow that only the skinniest people can fit through. The rest of us had to chimney up about 15 feet and slowly work our way over this narrow section before dropping down again. On Thursday we rappelled our way through several potholes in Adobe Swale before jumping over a rattle snake guarding the exit to Poison Springs. Friday’s Black Hole of the White Canyon had some interesting moments as Rob’s dog got a little cold during the long swims in the freezing water. A fantastic trip with a great group of people.

Good times for all concerned.
Did you all get washed out on Saturday?
The fun begins again next week.I hope you can attend…
That was quite a festival in North Wash!

A great trip indeed! The Arharts were hoping to get a canyon but a mini flash flood through camp quickly quelled that idea. I left North Wash late afternoon.

I agree with you 100% about Dave and Penny! I’d go anywhere with them!
