Aerial Touring north of Moab

img_2759After my mountain bike ride a couple of days ago I met two ppg pilots also camping at Big Mesa. Stuart and Tom are from Florida and out here for the week flying. The next two days consisted of flying around the Big Mesa area just north of Moab. The area consists of several buttes, mesas and canyons with dirt roads everywhere in case of an engine out and subsequent re-launch or rescue. On our first xc attempt  a bolt came loose on Tom’s exhaust and damaged his prop. The following day we successfully completed a xc from camp at Big Mesa, 10 miles west to where Spring Canyon Bottom rd drops into the canyon, then down the Green River and over Bowknot Bend before heading up Hell Roaring Canyon and Mineral Canyon back to camp (30+ miles). These were mostly early morning or late afternoon flights so not much soaring going on - I almost doubled the engine hours on my PAP during the last two days.
